Featured Luthier - Ko'olau Guitar & 'Ukulele Company
The Ko'olau Guitar & 'Ukulele Company is owned and operated by the Kitakis Family:
John and Susan Kitakis, and Sons Noa (Bonk) and Andrew. Ko'olau makes some of
the finest ukulele available. With the addition of their new Pono line the
the quality bar has been raised for an affordable ukulele. I've personally owned
several of the Ponos and getting a couple more this summer.
|
Ko’olau Gold 'Ukulele Strings
are professional quality strings, preferred by performers and recording artists.
(Ed.) These are the strings that I use on all my ukuleles. If you haven't tried the
Ko’olau strings in a while, these are really nice strings. As guitar player I searched for years for great
string from my guitars and when I found them I haven't needed to explore or switch in many years. I can
now say the same for ukulele strings.
(from Ko’olau site) - The new Ko’olau Gold strings “feel” different. They have a
smoother texture than the previous nylon strings. The rough textured string was due to the extrusion
cutting process performed in order to retain uniform gauged diameters throughout the length of the
string, which affects volume, tone and true notation up the fretboard. The new nylons are made of a
special polyamid nylon, then milled by an innovative laser cutting process, insuring perfect gauged
diameters, and eliminating the need for “rectifying” cutting knives which result in a rough,
textured surface. Throughout the years Ko’olau has received requests for a smoother feel to our
strings, and prior to this new laser cut, a uniform string was not possible. The new polyamid laser cut
string also has a “pre-stretched” feel and tension, resulting in a very short
“break-in” period.

By Jennifer Modenessi
Contra Costa Times
YOU PROBABLY wouldn't guess it from the stacks of wood piled almost to the roof of his Berkeley workshop, but
Michael DaSilva never set out to become a ukulele maker.
"I didn't grow up with enough music," says the soft-spoken 50-year-old Oakland resident and lone proprietor of
the DaSilva Ukulele Co. "I think I was a little bit starved."
Looking around his studio, you'd never know it.

A lifelong player and woodworker, Dave Means started building stringed instruments
as an avocation in 1995.Ê He has been doing set-up and repairs for over 30
years!Ê Since retirement from his "day job" in February, lutherie is now his
full-time retirement vocation.Ê Being a research engineer by formal training and
well-grounded in acoustical theory and practice gives Dave the know-how to make
your ukulele sound right.
All Glyph ukuleles are built with the same high-quality materials and attention to
detail, regardless of whether you choose a very basic model or an extremely fancy
one.Ê They all feature carbon-fiber neck reinforcement rods, lightweight titanium
bolt-on neck joint, slightly domed soundboard and back for strength with
lightness, and a French polished finish.Ê All Glyph ukuleles are assembled from
quality, well-seasoned woods under carefully controlled ideal temperature and
humidity conditions.Ê All major assembly is done with traditional hot hide glue
for superior acoustic characteristics and easy repairability.Ê All carry a
limited lifetime warranty.
There is a nice slide show of Dave Means of Glyph Custom Ukuleles building a
soprano uke for Howlin' Hobbit at
www.howlinhobbit.com/ukeshow.php
(Ed.) - I've had the occasion to play Dave's ukes over the last few years at various
ukulele festivals and they are incredible. Definetly on my list to have Dave
custom build me one.

Common Ukulele Sizes
|
Soprano -
The traditional "small" Ukulele. is also called a "Standard" .
Typical tuning "g C E A".
|
|
Concert -
A slightly larger instrument with a longer fret scale. Same tuning as a Soprano.
Still gives the familiar Uke sound, but with more volume
and easier fretboard access. Typical tuning "g C E A".
|
|
Tenor -
Larger still with heavier strings. This is the favorite of many
players because of its larger size, bigger sound, and 17 1/2" scale.
This size Uke is the one most used for six and eight string models. Can be tuned
like a Soprano and Concert "g C E A" or "d G B E"
|
|
Baritone -
The largest of the Uke family. Has the loudest sound,
the most bass, and is usually tuned DGBE like the thin four strings
on a guitar. Typical tuning "D G B E"
|
(From Tony Graziano Ukuleles web site. Be sure to visit Tony's site for some
of the coolest ukes around.)

G_String
G-String Ukulele Co. Established in 1993, in a one car
garage in Kapahulu, GString Ukulele Co. is rapidly becoming an industry leader in the
ukulele world. Their commitment to quality and focus on building musical instruments
rather than simply a "Hawaiian wood product" has set them apart from the
competition.
Always wanting to be different, owner Derek Shimizu wanted a name that did not start
with the letter "K." The tuning on most ukuleles is; GCEA where the "G" string is the
top string of the ukulele. Therefore, "The Top String in Ukuleles" was born.
Today, they build ukuleles in Halawa Valley, on Oahu near Aloha Stadium. Our 1,600
square foot facility is small but it is fully equipped to build top quality
instruments.

forward to having the opportunity to serve you. They would like to share a little
about themselves and the bringing forth of Kanile'a 'Ukulele.
Joe and Kristen were both born and raised in Kailua on the island of O'ahu. Joe is the
youngest of eight, and Kristen is an only child. Kristen’s background is in customer
sales and accounting. For Joe, the 'ukulele has always been part of his life. He can
recall, from a very young age, going to family parties and everyone sitting in a
circle and jamming Hawaiian music on their 'ukuleles and guitars. "In elementary
school is when I first got exposed to the 'ukulele. It was a requirement for music.
Hawaiian language class in High school is when I really started showing serious
interest in the 'ukulele, although, it wasn’t until after I graduated that the
'ukulele started to influence my life."

me. In 1990, I was given the chance to apprentice under a mas |
