Using a High "G" set for low "G" Tuning

Brudda Iz used a tenor uke in low "G" tuning and a creative use of standard Martin strings.

Brudda Iz used a regular high G Martin string set, but this is how he used the strings.

  • For the G string, he used his C string and tuned it low.
  • For the C string, he used his E string.
  • For the E string, he used his G string.
  • He left the A string in the normal place.

Israel “Bruddah Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole (May 20, 1959 — June 26, 1997) lived in Hawai’i until his death at the age of 38. He became famous outside Hawai’i when his album Facing Future was released in 1993 with his medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World’, which has been featured in several films, television programs, and television commercials.
