Tom grew up on Long Island, where he lives currently. As a child, Tom listened to a wide variety of music - bebop, standards, blues, bassa nova, and a lot of rock. Tom began teaching himself guitar when he was 11 years old. He got his first guitar when he went to visit his aunt and uncle, and saw his cousin's old classical guitar out with the garbage (quite literally)! His mom had an old book from her mother called The Joy of Guitar.
Tom immediately sat down on the living room floor with that cracked, old guitar and went through that whole book in one day! After that, he just kept going. He took some lessons while in high school and studied briefly with the great jazz guitar player and teacher Joe Monk. When he went to Hofstra University, he took a music theory class as an elective. Beyond that, Tom is mostly self-taught.
In high school and college, Tom played lead guitar in some rock bands for several years and spent time writing and arranging rock and pop tunes before becoming interested again in playing jazz guitar.
Now, Tom enjoys playing all different styles from pretty hard rock to straight-ahead jazz. There are some jazz tunes and some original rock instrumentals in the media room.

Stylistically, Savitt’s musical influences stem from both traditional and contemporary jazz, with a touch of acid/groove & world music sounds.
He plays electric, acoustic & MIDI guitar synthesizer, applying his melodic styling equally to all of these instruments. Jim is also a skilled producer, recording engineer and MIDI programmer. His improvisation and compositions have been described as "both fluid & melodic," combining lyrical phrasing and urban grooves.

David Sebring came to Nashville in 1970 to study music. Although not a country music specialist, David became enamored of the high degree of musicianship in and around Nashville. He first appeared on the PBS documentary "Showdown at the Hoedown" in the mid 70's backing up "Woody Paul" Chrisman in the final musical dual at the Smithville Jamboree. His first Rounder Record appearance was on Butch Robbins now historic record, "40 years late". "I have had the good fortune of studying with real string masters over the years, including Chet Atkins, Jerry Byrd, Harold Bradley, Lenny Breau, Billy Grammar and Norman Blake," says David. David traveled with Norman Blake and developed his style around the acoustic guitar sound.
David met Peter Hyrka in 1995 and helped form the Gypsy Hombres. "My goal is to develope artistically as a composer, bridging the gap between classical and jazz," says David. In 1999 he and Peter Hyrka co-composed "Nuage de la Nuit," for The Gypsy Hombres with chamber orchestra.
David has performed on radio, stage, and/or T.V with such musical legends as: Minnie Pearl, Vassar Clements, Marty Stuart, Grandpa Jones, Lyle Lovett, Tiny Moore, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Nashville Jug Band, Uncle Walt's Band, Bill Monroe, Mark O'Connor, Buddy Spicher, Chet Atkins, Paul Yandel, Gatemouth Brown, Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Nashville Mandolin Ensemble, and many others.
David is a virtual musical encyclopedia of American music, and can play and sing over 5,000 songs from memory.

A professional musician for over thirty years, Mitch Seidman began performing in his early teens around Albany, New York, and continued in Boston in 1973 after relocating to continue his education. A Kenny Burrell record first inspired him to pursue jazz guitar, and soon after became inspired by the late Attila Zoller through study and a friendship that began in 1974. In 1979 he moved to New York City where he freelanced in styles of jazz from traditional and swing to progressive, then returned to Boston in 1985 and became one of New England’s busiest jazz guitarists.
Mitch has appeared in the Boston area at the Regattabar, Scullers, Ryles, and the Willow Jazz Club, Papashon in Los Angeles, along with numerous jazz clubs and concert venues throughout New England. While residing in New York City he appeared at Jazzmania, The Other End, the Red Blazer II, and Folk City. Mitch performed at the Jazz is Toulon festival in France, and was an artist-in-residence for the Centro Cultural Norteamericano in Costa Rica. He’s appeared at the Internationales Jazz Guitar Meeting in Germany with guitarist Fred Fried and bassist John Goldsby, and performs annually at the Classic American Guitar Show in New York.

(from artist's site) - A touring veteran of multiple jazz festivals, Dave has drawn the admiration of many of his most seasoned and well-respected peers, several of whom have joined him on his forthcoming album. The album both original material and covers showcases Dave’s guitar talents with friends like superstar bassist Wayman Tisdale, piano legend Bob James, N’Dea Davenport, Ladybug, sax man Warren Hill and Stevie Wonder-sideman Nathan Watts.
Dave Sereny’s love of music quickly developed when, as a young boy, his older brother Mike took him to the record store and introduced him to an array of musical styles. From that moment onward, Dave endeavored to make music a way of life. At the age of 9, Dave had the wonderful opportunity to see Doobie Brothers in Concert and was truly touched by the melodic experience. Soon afterward, Dave’s older brother Mike once again played a significant part in his career path by purchasing a guitar for him when his just 9 years old. Throughout the years, Dave immersed himself in music culture and sampled music from every genre.

This is not a CD that attempts to assault the listener with ego or insistent playing. Rather, it is an album that clearly realizes the beauty of the melodies of each tune played. Tunes like “There Will Never be Another You”, “Black Orpheus”, “My Favorite Things”, “Milestones”, “Autumn Leaves”, “So What”, “Cute” and other standards, are performed with deference to the musical statements that can be found within the harmonic and melodic content of each tune, as are the two original tunes written by Sheller: “Kelle Belle” and “Midnight Café”. In other words, there is some nice playing going on here.
Sheller’s single line playing is smooth and straightforward with an effortless quality that can only be portrayed by someone who has been playing and listening for some time. And his chordal work is skillful with fat sounding voicings that work very well in this trio setting. Just check out the gorgeous chordal arrangement Sheller comes up with on the original tune “Woman Child” (written by producer Chuck Anderson). Very nice indeed.
The remaining members, Daoud Shaw on drums and Steve Beskrone on electric bass, complement Sheller’s playing by providing a strong rhythmic foundation for Sheller to play off of. However, Beskrone gets off some nice solos on a few tunes showing that he can grab the spotlight when need be.
Overall, this is a very nice CD to have in your collection and I look forward to hopefully more Midnight visits to the Jazz Cafe. ( review from JazzGuitarLife.com )

(from artist's site) - Scott Sherwood, born in Milwaukee, WI, was introduced to jazz through his father's record collection. He began playing guitar at the age of 15 in San Antonio, TX and quickly captured attention for his performances. While in high school Scott received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for three consecutive years. During this period he was also voted IAJE Overall Outstanding Musician at the University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Festival, Kingsville Jazz Festival and Fiesta Stage Band Festival Senior Division. Scott attended the University of Texas at Arlington after winning the Michael Lorimer Guitar and Jazz Studies Scholarship. Later he left UTA to begin his professional career in Milwaukee, WI. There he performed his original music with the band "Kinetic Shower", which was nominated by the Wisconsin Music Industry (WAMI) for jazz artists of the year. In 1990, he returned to Texas to attend the University of Texas at Austin. During that year, Scott earned a Downbeat Award for Outstanding Performance at the college level. Scott has performed concerts and clinics across the United States as well as in Costa Rica and Scotland.
(from artist's site) - Founded in 1996, Silver Music is dedicated to providing high-quality, individualized music instruction to musicians of all levels. We currently offer guitar, bass, piano, voice and banjo lessons.
(from artist's site) - Doug Simon began playing guitar at the age of sixteen and is entirely self-taught. He came up being influenced by early recordings of Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery and George Benson as well as the funk hierarchy in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. He quickly became part of the jazz and funk scene and was asked to play and record with most of the hot groups and players including Satch of the Ohio Players. During a stint with fellow guitarist Wilbert Longmire, Doug was offered and accepted the position of guitarist for legendary jazz organist Brother Jack McDuff, a job once held by his idol George Benson. Doug recorded for Capitol Records with the funk group Dayton. He is the former guitarist for A&M recording star Vesta Williams. His playing has been heard on nationally aired commercials and jingles. His guitar work (featured solos and background parts) has been showcased on the international CBS hit soap opera The Young And The Restless.
(from artist's site) - A professional musician since the age of seventeen, Ottawa’s Shane Simpson is a relative newcomer to the roots music arena, having spent 15 years pursuing his craft as a fingerstyle jazz guitarist. The impulsive purchase of a steel string guitar drew Shane back to his songwriting roots where he incorporates elements of blues, jazz, flamenco and bluegrass to his music.

(from artist's site) - Greg Skaff is a NYC-based musician and composer whose skills and reputation place him among the premier guitarists in jazz. Fresh to the Big Apple in the ‘80s, Skaff had his first professional gig with none other than Stanley Turrentine—which went so well the sax master kept him gainfully employed for the next five years. In subsequent years Greg has flourished as both a sideman and bandleader and played and recorded with, among others, Bobby Watson, Ruth Brown, Freddie Hubbard, David “Fathead” Newman, Kevin Mahogany, Gloria Lynne, Jim Rotondi, David Hazeltine, Bruce Barth, Mike LeDonne, Joe Farnsworth, Matt Wilson, Ben Allison, Orrin Evans, and Victor Lewis.
(from artist's site) - Alex Skolnick, born in 1968, grew up in Berkeley, California. At age nine, a fascination with the rock group Kiss led to a desire to learn guitar.
At age sixteen, Alex tried out for a local band called Legacy. Shortly after graduating from high school, he found himself recording his first album with the group, who by this time had changed their name to Testament. What followed were five albums and countless tours with, among others, Megadeth, Slayer, Judas Priest, and White Zombie. Alex received critical acclaim for his lead guitar work, which had been inspired by heroes such as Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, ranking high in many guitar magazine polls, often as 'Best Thrash Guitarist' and 'Most Underrated Guitarist.'
In addition to his metal accomplishments, Alex has made a mark that no one would have predicted: as a jazz guitarist. In 1988, while working on the second Testament album, nineteen year old Alex happened to capture one of Miles Davis’ guitar driven electric bands on television. This inspired an intense study of jazz, leading to, his eventual relocating to New York City, where he earned a BfA from New School University's jazz program (class of 2001).
(from artist's site) - You could say Adam grew up inside of a cornfield—on 3 acres of property his parents bought in an existing cornfield of which 3 sides was surrounded by rows, and rows of corn. Bar River (35min east of Sault Ste. Marie), a very small working-class community in Northern Ontario, Canada, is the place that provided the young guitarist with his deep roots in Country and Bluegrass music. Initially, at 7 years old, he had wanted to the play 5-string banjo, but when told by a local teacher he was too small to play it, he then tried his hand at the guitar. His bond with the instrument was immediate. By the tender age of 12 he became a member of the musician's union and burst onto the local music scene performing at various community events. By 14, was on the road gaining valuable experience such as playing night clubs and weddings around Northern Ontario.
(from WikipediA) - William Schultz, chairman of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, of which Guild Guitars was a subsidiary, asked Smith if he would be willing to return his endorsement to the Guild Artist Award. Familiar with Schultz's management, and knowing that the construction would be supervised by master luthier Bob Benedetto, Smith agreed. The Guild Johnny Smith Award by Benedetto was available through Guild dealers until early 2006 when Benedetto left Fender. Unlike Guild and Gibson, Heritage Guitars discontinued manufacture of their Smith-designed guitar after Smith withdrew his endorsement.
His most famous musical composition is the tune "Walk, Don't Run", written for a 1955 recording session as counter-melody to the chord changes of "Softly, As in the Morning Sunrise". Another guitarist Chet Atkins covered the song. Some musicians who became The Ventures heard the Atkins version, simplified it and speeded it up and made it into a big hit in 1960.
A few of the available Johnny Smith CDs. Not a lot of his albums have been reissued. His great catalog of work needs to be released. One of the all time great guitarists.

Born in Munich, Germany, Leni started playing piano at the age of six and guitar at eleven. At seventeen, she formed her own acting company, and her radical productions sold out houses across Europe. In 1977, she turned her attention to music and left for the United States to study film scoring at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Scoring gave way to her love for guitar and in 1981, Leni moved to New York to play in a variety of rock and jazz bands. In 1983, she formed a group of her own with Paul Motion on drums and Bill Frisell on guitar. As a recording artist, she originally made a name for herself in jazz circles (her first nine albums were instrumental,) then crossed her talents over into the singer-songwriter realm, garnering consistent praise in the process. Critics have said her music incorporates “intelligent lyrics and beautifully drawn vignettes” (Washington Post), “crystalline, jazz-meets-blues guitar lines” (Guitar Player), and “thoughtful structure, evocative moods, attention to groove” (San Francisco Bay Guardian). A “Fleet and Lyrical guitarist”, (The New Yorker). “A Gifted Singer-Songwriter with a Wide-Ranging Sensibility and Sophisticated Guitar and Harmonic Chops” (The Boston Globe). Leni runs her own label, LSR/RED.
Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern on their new CD Lifecycle
(from artist's site) -
In a career that spans three decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic and innovative recordings, four time GRAMMY nominee Mike Stern has established himself as one of the premier jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists and composers of his generation.
Born in Boston in January 1953, Stern grew up in Washington, DC, then returned to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. After college, he got his start as a guitar player with Blood, Sweat & Tears at age 22. Following a brief stint with Billy Cobham's powerhouse fusion band from 1979 to 1980, he moved to New York City, where he was recruited by Miles Davis to play a key role in Miles' celebrated comeback band of 1981 (which also included bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, percussionist Mino Cinelu and saxophonist Bill Evans). During his three-year period with Miles, Stern appeared on three recordings with the jazz maestro - Man with the Horn, Star People and the live We Want Miles. He toured with Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth Band from 1983 through 1985 and returned to Miles' lineup for a second tour of duty that lasted close to a year.
