Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly Orange County and other areas of Southern California.
Surf Music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, particularly Orange County and other areas of Southern California. It was particularly popular between 1961 and 1965, has subsequently been revived and was highly influential on subsequent rock music. It has two major forms: largely instrumental surf rock, with an electric guitar or saxophone playing the main melody, pioneered by acts such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, and vocal surf pop, including both surf ballads and dance music, often with strong harmonies that are most associated with The Beach Boys. Many notable surf bands have been equally noted for both surf instrumental and surf pop music, so surf music is generally considered as a single genre despite the variety of these styles. Vintage reproductions and unique designs of guitars and pickups.
For over two decades, Thomas V. Jones, founder of TV Jones, Inc., has earned the respect and high praise of countless world-class guitar players. Tom’s first encounter with the guitar was at the age of 14 when he purchased his first guitar. His interest led him on a passionate journey toward becoming a self taught musician, luthier, and eventually, pickup maker. Tom’s success as a pickup maker stems from his incredible ear for tone.
Tom’s interest in the Filter’Tron™ pickup arose from his association with guitarist Brian Setzer, whose guitars Tom has worked on since 1993. His first close encounter with a Filter’Tron pickup was on Brian’s 1959 Gretsch 6120. In 1998, custom pickups were needed for the newly designed Gretsch Hot Rod guitar line. Brian chose Tom’s Hot Rod pickup design in a blind test of many different pickups. Several months later, Tom became an independent consultant for the Gretsch Guitar Company. In addition to pickup and guitar design, he worked directly with many Gretsch artists to accurately translate their musical needs to the factory. Tom was also an integral part of the field Guitar Service Program.
(from Fender site) Introduced in 1962, the Jaguar paired a shorter 24" scale with brighter-sounding pickups and a Jazzmaster-like dual-circuit control layout. It was a hit during the early-'60s surf music era into which it was born, and, like the Jazzmaster, underwent a popular resurgence from the 1980s onward as an epitome of subversive, low-cost cool in the hands of rock anti-heroes on both sides of the Atlantic.
( from WikipediA site ) - The Fender Jaguar is an electric guitar which was introduced in 1962. Whether the designers of the Jaguar had intended the instrument to be used for Surf music, or if it was a further attempt to break into the Jazz guitar market (as was the case with its predecessor the Jazzmaster) remains a topic of dispute among Jaguar aficionados. Nevertheless, the Jaguar quickly caught on in the emerging surf music scene, joining the Jazzmaster, Mosrite and Stratocaster as the guitars most associated with the style. They both became popular again in the 1990s when they were used by a number of grunge rock bands.
Fender unveiled its Jazzmaster guitar in 1958, intending to score a one-two punch with an instrument that would be the company's top-of-the line successor to the Stratocaster guitar and appeal to serious jazz guitarists, a class of musician that had eluded Fender's widening reach. Although it succeeded on neither count, the distinctive Jazzmaster nonetheless surprised everybody by reaching widespread success in some unexpected arenas.
( from WikipediA site ) - The Fender Jazzmaster is an electric guitar that was first introduced at the 1958 NAMM Show and was designed as a more upmarket instrument than the Fender Stratocaster, which was originally to replace the Telecaster model. As its name indicates, it was initially marketed at jazz guitarists but was more commonly played by surf rock guitarists in the early 1960s and, more recently, by indie rock artists. It is frequently confused with the similar looking albeit tonally different Jaguar.
( from WikipediA site ) - The Fender Mustang is an electric guitar by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, introduced in 1964 as the basis of a major redesign of Fender's student models then consisting of the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic. It was produced until 1982 and reissued in 1990.
( from WikipediA site ) - The Fender Stratocaster, often referred to as "Strat", is a model of electric guitar designed by Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and Freddie Tavares in 1954, and manufactured continuously by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation to the present. It is a double-cutaway guitar, with an extended top horn for balance while standing. The Stratocaster has been used by many leading guitarists and can be heard on many historic recordings. Along with the Gibson Les Paul, Gibson SG, and the Fender Telecaster, it is one of the most common and enduring models of electric guitar in the world. The design of the Stratocaster has transcended the field of music to rank among the classic industrial designs of all time; examples have been exhibited at major museums around the world.

(Ed. I discover the band Friends of Dean Martinez when I purchased the DVD Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea. A great documentary by Tilapia Film
(from artist's site) - Here is what Richie Unterberger said about Friends of Dean Martinez at AllMusic.com
A Southwestern alternative rock supergroup of sorts, Arizona's Friends of Dean Martinez features past and present members of Giant Sand, Calexico, and Naked Prey. Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, though not a member of the group, plays guest keyboards on their debut album, The Shadow of Your Smile, a surprisingly retro set of guitar-based instrumentals inspired by instrumental and surf rock of the late '50s and early '60s. With plenty of lounge music and desert country guitar twang thrown in, it's certainly retro in feel, but not revivalist; with Bill Elm's keening steel guitar at the forefront and occasional insertions of found sound and experimental bits, they evoke open dusty landscapes ...
