Scales are the are the alphabetic of music. From scales melodies are created, chords, chord progressions and a whole boat load of other musical goodies.
Depending on the styles of music that you play or perform. There are a core set of scales that you must know. A a minimum you should know the pentatonic scales, the blues aka minor pentatonic and the major pentatonic.
